"Giselle at ROH"

Was anyone there at ROH last night to see Sarah Wildor perform Giselle? I must say she was just wonderful-after seeing her do the role 5years ago when she was a First soloist.(I think..?)

I saw her performance on Friday evening. Indeed it was a pleasure to see her dance Giselle again. She had not been cast in recent seasons of Giselle and Romeo & Juliet and her performances recently in these two roles have reminded us just what a great dramatic ballerina she is. Although many might say that she and Cope are not physically well matched, she seems to show a tremendous confidence when dancing with him. She is on record as saying that she would love to dance with him and she has had ample opportunity these past few months to do this. Cope himself seems to be enjoying dancing with her as well. The two swallow lifts in Act 2 were absolutely effortless on his behalf.
The evening was also made memorable for me because of the support of some of the other characters taking part. Luke Heydon an excellent Hilarion, and the acting of Genesia Rosato as Bathilde and Alastair Marriot as the leader of the hunt were an object lesson in character acting. Something I think the Royal are very good at.

Being very new to ballet, I can't comment on the technical virtuosity of the dancers, but as someone who simply loves the beauty of it all, Giselle was wonderful. I preferred act two, which i thought flowed much better - act one felt a bit melodramatic at times - but i thought sarah wildor was wonderful and am still determined to marry Jonathan Cope. What a star!

I really like this, Cathryn!
Jonathan Cope was unsurpassed in the performance on Friday evening. His Albretch was a hundred times better than his Siegfried. Another dancer to mention is Sasaki. He was brilliant in his solo.

I saw Sarah Wildor early in 1995 at a matinee performance of Giselle - I am not sure whether it was her debut performance as Giselle, but she was a Soloist at the time. I really enjoyed her performance, but not that of her Albrecht, Zoltan Solymosi, who did not impress me at all. However Hilarion was played by Adam Cooper who was fantastic in that role, very intense.
This time I am going to see Cojocaru and am really looking forward to seeing her dance, especially after an article I read last weekend by Judith Mackrell

I saw her do Giselle some years ago too, although I waited until Solymosi had left or was injured, because I couldn't stand to see him do Albrecht again! I thought she was very good, even then.

Why when praising one and all , no one has mentioned the lovely Muriel Valtat, who danced the pas de six,who once again displayed, the wonders of the dance,we really should see more of her, she is the best by far first soloist in the company, I do so hope that the new director reconises her talent.

Solymosi, the most exiting dancer the Royal has had for years, and is greatly missed by many, the only dancer who gives the same exitement on stage is Hilaire of The Paris Opera, so how you can say you had to wait untill he had left, to enjoy Giselle i really do not know, UTTER RUBISH.

I saw him dance it with Asylmuratova, and he ruined it for me. And whenever I saw him his technique was always really sloppy.

Sarah as Giselle, Adam as Hilarion, that performance must have been the least convincing Giselle !!

Please could anyone going to see Saturday afternoon's performance of "Giselle" post a few words afterwards to say what they thought of Alina's performance. I would love to go, but am due to give birth imminently, so don't think it would be wise! I think she is a lovely dancer, and I hope she impresses.

I'm going and am really looking forward to it. I will post some thoughts when I get back but I'll try not to excite you too much! Hope everything goes well for you!
