Some pieces based on the usual Opera is first premise but which should be of more than passing interest...

A plague of bad opera
Each year, UK taxpayers contribute £50 million towards our opera and ballet companies. So why, asks Rupert Christiansen, do we welcome so many overworked, underqualified troupes from abroad?

Brendan, thank you for posting that last link. It's good to know that despite the fact there there doesn't appear to be any ballet at all in Ireland, at least the press there is not averse to writing about it. My guess is that when Ninette de Valois dies there will be a huge upsurge of interest in the Irish press!

No reviews but an interesting collection of links non-the-less. I went off in pursuit of some electronic reviews of Christopher Hampson's new piece for RNZB, but could not find any, though he has been getting some publicity... (and we have a diary from him in the next mag which gets released in two days)

Hampson and Harris in NZ..
Grown-up Billy Elliots
A pair of likely lads are here to produce a work for the Royal NZ Ballet that, they say, is exotic and sexually charged. Bess Manson is impressed with their energy.

Ballet Training in NZ
Triumph over taunts
New Zealand has inherited an Anglo-Saxon stigma about ballet. Only about one in 50 pupils are male. A man who survived derision in his English boyhood is now artistic director of the National Ballet and Dance School in Christchurch. He talks to Hans Petrovic.
