Not bad at all! Zelensky seemed to enjoy himself in this MacMillan's version more than in the Kirov's. Wilder was gorgeous and absolutely wonderful in the pdd (although I felt she's too small for her Romeo).

Curious too see if she manages this ballet, I have a ticket for her next Juliet, again it is obvious she is miscast with Igor, poor boy having to stoop so low,the only consolation she will not be a problem to lift, but as neither have acting skills, I now wish I had bought a cheap seat, but of course was hoping for Darcy.

LAST EDITED ON 25-02-01 AT 12:47 PM (GMT)

I saw the Wildor and Zelensky 'Romeo and Juliet', too, and really enjoyed it. They were both thoroughly, and movingly, into their parts. I didn't envy Sarah having to face an audience that had wanted to see Darcey Bussell (I wanted to see Darcey myself), but I thought she danced her socks off. And Zelensky, of course, was a feast for the eyes.

I don't think people will be disappointed by this cast.

I always wondered what people find so special about Zelensky. Of course he is a fabulous dancer, but on the dramatic front...??
I've seen him a couple of times with the Kirov Ballet and he looked so uninterested and uncommitted that he was boring us all to death. Most of the time he looked as if he was just picking the money.

Any comments ?

I'm looking forward to Sarah's Juliet with J.Cope's Romeo. I personally think Sarah has fine acting skills. Yes, she lacks the technique of Miyako or Darcey. But for R&J I don't look for dancers technique. I've never seen her Juliet before and she is not my favourite principal. But I look forward to seeing her Juliet for the first time. I saw Darcey and Zelensky in R&J a couple of years ago and it didn't do anything to me. For me Darcey is the last Juliet I want to see. Each person has different taste.

Funny - the last time I saw Darcey and Igor perform R&J everyone around me was in tears! I didn't hear one snivel or see a hanky around me at all on Friday night as good as the show was and it was good!!

>Each person has different taste.

Yes and that is a great but one thing I have noticed over the past few months is the adverse comments being made about dancers in a very public domain!!Everyone has opinions but just because posters don't like specific dancers do they need to constantly criticise them. All dancers work incredibly hard and need our support and for them to get to where they are they must have talent wether we appreciate or not!

I have never seen Igor have trouble lifting anybody!

but as neither have

That is your opinion but Sarah is regarded as a very dramatic dancer and Igor can be as well - depends on who you see him dance with!

Shirley, do you mean that Zelensky is not inspired by Darcey ? I must say that Sarah Wildor is certainly a much better actress than Bussell.

I didn't say that at all - I would say, having seen Igor dance with both the kirov and the Royal, that he is more inspired dancing with the the Royal than the the Kirov. Some people would say Darcey brings out the best in Igor!

I must say that
>Sarah Wildor is certainly a
>much better actress than Bussell.

Your opinion - I wouldn't necessarily agree depending on the role!

I saw Monday night's performance - and had expected to be dazzled by Zelensky and disappointed in Wildor when I had hoped to see Darcey. But I was wrong - completely the opposite! I loved Wildor's Juliet - I don't have any complaints with her acting and was very moved, but I can't say the same for Zelensky, who didn't (for me) display his huge skills. I preferred seeing Urlezaga 10 days ago.

Friday the 23rd. was the first time I had seen 'Romeo & Juliet', and I thought it was great. Excellent production, wonderful music, and all the parts performed very well, especially the principals. The adverse criticisms of Wildor and Zelensky really surprise me, as I thought they 'gave their all' to their roles and were very moving. Admittedly I had been hoping to see Darcey Bussell as Juliet, but hopefully that opportunity will come another day!

I was one of those hoping for Darcey/Igor, too - I admit. And I would not have wanted to be the one to face an audience expecting Darcey... BUT I must say I DID like the performance. Zelensky seemed to enjoy himself (I won't make any comments about acting skills as I think this really is something depending on people's personal taste), and although Sarah is not the tallest of dancers, they looked good together.
And it was nice to meet some of you in person!
