"Mayerling"

The current superb series of Romeos has made me nostalgic for my favourite MacMillan three acter - Mayerling - and speculating on how it could be cast from the current RB company. The time is ripe for another revival, so here are my thoughts:

Rudolf - Watson, Cope, Kobborg
Marie Vetsera - Wildor, Revie, Hatley
Larisch (the best role)- Rojo, Benjamin, Bull, Valtat
Tsarina - Rosato, Yanowsky, McGorian
Stephanie - Cojocaru, Tattersall
Mitzi Caspar - Tapper, V Palmer, Nunez
Bratfisch - Cervera, Ciriaci

I would love to see Adam Cooper come back to dance Rudolf, and maybe the RB could borrow Robert Parker!

Any comments?

I agree with Leanne Benjamin as Larisch. After seeing her in The Judas Tree (on video, anyway) I think she would be excellent.
But no room for Sylvie?

I think the main problem's Rudolf. Cope was okay, but not outstanding, when I saw him do it a few years ago (but then he was a replacement for Adam Cooper, who in turn was a replacement for Michael Nunn ..., so possibly my expectations were too high). Kobborg might be good, Watson I'm not so sure about, mainly because a) it's a very long way to go from the type of roles he's been doing so far to an extremely physically demanding lead role in a 3-acter. Also, it occurs to me that from what I've seen him dance so far he hasn't had much serious on-stage partnering experience, which would be a distinct drawback. I think the RB'd be really pushed to cast it from the current dancers.

Yes, I agree with that. My only Rudolf was Irek and my brain seems to be filtering out alternatives. Also I'm finding it hard to imagine an alternative to Darcey for Mitzi - she fitted the role perfectly, I thought.

Looks like Zelensky has to guest as Rudolf, then! Wildor would be a splendid Mary Vetsera, but I think Cojocaru would also be perfect in the part. I hope Rosato will still do Larisch, she is wonderful in the part, but I'd like to see her as the empress too. Any takers for Galeazzi as Mitzi Caspar?

>could borrow Robert Parker! ***Best idea so far. He would be a definite asset to the RB and should he move, it would be a great loss for BRB.

Any chance of joint appointments between the companies?

Surely there must be an alternative to this drastic action? We would miss you badly. Maybe you could go and see something else instead?

I think its clear that Rudolf is the casting problem. I think Watson could do it, as he clearly has the intelligence and needs a big role sooner rather than later. Zelensky is a very interesting idea. Sadly I think Irek is now too old. I only meant to borrow Robert Parker - I doubt BRB will ever stage it and its such a wonderful role - Leticia Mueller would also be a wonderful Larisch. Galeazzi could also be a good Vetsera - I have an idea she has done it once. There is also the little scene-stealing part of Stephanies sister in the opening ballroom scene, memorably taken by Wildor last time, and created I think by Rosato in 78.

I also liked Darcey as Mitzi, although she was really too nice - Chadwick was better for me, and I have fond memories of Rosalyn Whitten, a wonderful artist who had the gift of making the smallest character memorable by her stage presence and very expressive features. She didn't have the performing career she should have had; ENB are lucky to have her.

Completly agree! I read in an interview that Mr Parker is a Londoner...and though he likes Birmingham...he really wants to be in london w/ his family. It would be great if Parker joined the RB..cos maybe that will let him have a larger following..because I never heard of him until i read Ismene Browns review of BRB's fille and went over and watched him. He'd be great for the RB and could be the next Anthony Dowell...i wonder what kind of partnership he'd develop

A Londoner - no way! Our Robert is a northerner, born on Humberside and as for the next Anthony Dowell, well the lad's only 24 - time yet. And JIM, the only person who will woo me away from drastic action (as you no doubt know) is Adam. And Robert may well be a very worthy successor in terms of the acting/ability of our hero.
But, seriously, if BRB (as a touring company) were to lose such dancers of the calibre of the likes of Parker, we in the provinces would be bereft. It will happen, I know, but what a shame.... Not all of us can afford regular trips up to London to see our favourites. Maybe Stephanie's suggestion would be one solution.

Interesting to see in this months Dance Europe, Michael Nunn cites playing Rudolf as the highlight of his career - and he only managed a couple of performances before his long injury layoff.
