"Question for Eugene re. DVD"

Eugene, seeing you on the other thread reminded me that I wanted to ask you about DVD of which I believe you are an expert. I don't have a DVD player and have no real expectation of having one soon. However my new(ish) computer has a DVD drive. Am I going to see a better quality image by watching a ballet DVD through my computer monitor than with a convential video tape player connected to my television (my computer monitor is about the same size as my TV). If you (or anyone else) could advise me I would be grateful.

Jim, the current BBC Music Magazine has a sampler DVD of BBC bits and pieces that includes two ballet extracts. You could try that on your machine. I think some libraries may offer DVDs for loan for another test.

   >the current BBC Music Magazine

Thanks Stuart. Presumably on sale on the top shelves of all dubious booksellers?

Yes. But it would only be on the top shelf if they had Sylvie in 'Herman Schmerman' on the cover.

Firstly I am no expert on DVD!

But I can help you with your query. You can play DVD through a computer if you have the right drivers installed - Check you manual for this. But the picture quality will be poor unless you have a MPEG card. These cost about 100.
