"New French-produced film regarding Louis XIV"

   January 22, 2001

I learned that a French-produced film about Louis XIV and his
relationship with Lully and Moliere was released in early December and was being given quite a run of advertising at Paris
metro stops. It apparently also had a healthy amount of baroque
style dancing.

What is the name of the film and has anyone in Paris or visiting
Paris seen it and can give us some idea of what it's like?

Thanks.

The film is called 'Le Roi Danse' and I saw it in Paris just before Christmas. Directed by the same director as for Farinelli, it is a sumptuous period piece and delightful for that alone. It concerns the relationship between Lully and the young Louis XIV, the latter using Lully's music, Moliere's stagecraft and his own proficiency at dancing to create the image of divine monarchy. There is much historical intirgue between the young king and his mother who wishes to keep hold of the reins of power, excellent performances, albeit with a little too much drunken frnzy from Lully who is portrayed as a near manic Italian obsessive. Interestingly, all the articles and reviews in Paris did not mention Lully's homosexuality which is quite clearly portrayed and preferred to write about his platonic love for the King.
A successful film in that slightly heavy-handed style the French favour for period drama, but hugely enjoyable.

Le Roi danse is not a french movie but a belgian one with french actors as Benoit Magimel as Louis XIV and Boris Terral as Lully. Gerard Corbiau, till director of Farinelli and Maitre de musique with José Van Dam made a new great movie about XVIIe century.
In this movie, Louis XIV is painted as a young man only interested by Dance. I saw the movie, last sunday.
I don't know what it's true and what it's completely unbelievable. What is interesting in this movie, is to see how many lyric is an italian speciality and dance a french speciality. It's interesting also to learn that Comedie Française and POB not exactly their name at the Louis XIV period, were born from the quarell between Lully and Molière.
But if you could see the movie, go to see it.
