"La Fille 18 Jan"

With the fox hunting bill recently pass it seems rather appropriate that La Fille starts it run in London.

Given my comments made about Yoshida quite recently I do not wish to blow her trumpet too much. But I will say that she was even better now as was 2 yrs ago at the RFH. Yoshida will never match Collier on speed and even dramtical abiltiy (although she was excellent here) but it is those effortless moves, floating wieghtless jumps and grace that make her very special in this role. The Fanny Esler variation was the best I have seen!

Irek seems to be no longer in decline physically. It was a pretty depressing sight to see him say 4 years ago where it was obvious he was not the dancer he use to be and he could only get worse. But although age has taken its toll he can still jump very well and of course his wonderfull acting will never decline!

So overall it was a very pleasant evening!

I too thought Miyako was absolutely wonderful last night - both in terms of dancing and acting. As for Irek, whatever his physical state, it certainly is difficult to match him in charisma!

Overall, I agree. I thought they started a little shakily. The straight arm lift did not materialise in their first pas de deux.( I might be being a little harsh), however as the evening went on it just got better and better. Yoshida's solo in the final act was tremendous. It's a long time since I have seen such speedy footwork and it was made to look effortless. I noticed from press reviews that Alexander Grant has been coaching the dancers and I thought there were things in the performances of the main characters that were missing when "Fille" was last performed at the RFH.

I felt that Yoshida possibly surpassed Collier in speed, and almost matched her dramatically in this role, when I saw her 2 yrs ago - but then I did go on a particularly "on" night.
