"Royal Ballet - "on-line" reservations"

Following some adverse criticism on these postings, I can report that the R.O.H. on-line booking system now works well. I ordered a ticket and was given personal confirmation of the booking by e-mail within 24 hrs. This is much better - last year I didn't know if my applications were succesful until the tickets arrived a week or so later.
However, it is still not quite as good as the Paris Opéra Ballet, because with that I was given my seat number only seconds after my mouse-finger (accidentally) slipped, and received further e-mail confirmation the next day.

I think the on-line booking at ROH and the Paris Opéra has still a long way to go !

When I booked on-line in Italy I received a confirmation within 10 minutes. They even offered the possibility to make a free 24-hours reservation before booking.

A few weeks ago I met a Belgian dancer who danses in Götheborg-Sweden. Afterwards I discovered their website : you need to see this ! The minimalist design is beautiful (www.opera.se)

You can make a 'virtual' tour behind the scenes and through the magnificient building.
The on-line booking provides views from every seat !
Concerning the 'seats with restricted view' you can even "try" the difference between 'leaning forward' and 'sitting back'.
(I think Eugene or someone else mentioned a similar website sometime ago)

And for a 'special occasion' you make a table-reservation in the opera-restaurant. Even the menu & wine-list is on-line !

For those who have already lost control over their fingers, this can become a very expensive 'look to the future'!

Crikey! Yes, I see what you mean!!
I suppose when something is awful, even a marginal improvement seems wonderful. Even so, I think the POB and ROH are reasonably satisfactory.

Hey this is great!! What I need however is a system that asks for your height when you buy a seat because most views are not great if you are 1.5m and the person in front is 1.8m!

The Houston opera web site also has the ability to choose your seat and gives the particular view from any seat in the opera house. This would be so much more useful in the Royal Opera House with its irregular shape. Perhaps they choose not to have this facility as it would be a show up the limitation of the house!

With regard to the difficulties for shorter people perhaps it will obligatory to submit your hight so that the computer allocates seats to insure that smaller people can see the stage. Or that front stall seats are set asside for shorter people (rather like the disabled parking spot we see outside supermarkets. This might become compulsory under the Civil Rights laws on the grounds of equal access for the "disabled".

Perhaps in 10 years time we may consider the lack of accesabilty for shorter people in 20th century theatres to be as obnoxious as the policy of barring coloured people from all but the balconey in the 19th century theatres!
