"Another hazard..."

...to add to last week's poll of distractions in the audience: a baby. Imagine bringing one to Guillem and Hilaire's Giselle, and imagine the theatre letting someone take it into the auditorium! Naturally it didn't enjoy itself much and had to be removed quite soon.

Semenyaka's own child once screamed out "Mama" from the wings as the great lady made her first entrance in Giselle, so you can't always blame the audience.

I was about 2 seats from the baby. It was incredible. The first time I have seen this. It seemed rather obviouse that the dark lights, lots of strangers around and dramatic music would frighten the poor child! When they left it caused even more disturbance. I think Sadlers should have a policy about this.

Sometimes children can be a great plus. I went to see La Fille in Birmingham but unknowingly I stumbled into a schools matinee. The kids loved it. They clapped in the tambourine scene, wolf whistled at Lise and Alain at the pas de deux. At the curtain calls they screamed so loudly for Lise I thought the house would collapsed. Although this is not something I would like to see every performance it was certainly a lot fun to there that afternoon!!

But Eugene, this was LAST night, i.e Wednesday, when I think you were at the Bolshoi? Can there be a whole series of babies being introduced to ballet at Sadler's Wells this week?

Next suggestion - bring a deaf granny who constantly asks "What's happening? Who's this?"

Re Eugene's comments: there's a big difference between a crying baby and a bunch of enthusiastic kids who are actively watching the ballet. I was at a school's performance of Nutcracker a couple of years ago and it was tremendous fun - but I wanted to throttle the baby last night. It was just behind me as well.

Jonathan: It was Wednesday night. And yeah, I've heard that the Bill's latest slapper is called Jenny Delaney. So's the slapper on Star Trek: Voyager.

I have *no* idea where they're getting the idea that Jenny Delaney is an appropriate name for one of easy virtue.

Good grief! There must have been another baby in the theatre the following night. I wonder if it was the same person as on the first night. She may have been determined to see Sylvie Gulliem no matter how many times she needs to try.

As a proud godfather myself I am sympathetic to the hardships having a baby can play on someone's social life. But I think that the consideration has to be given to the hundreds of people who evenings would be disrupted by a crying baby. Moreover if you can afford ballet tickets you can surely afford to have some child care arrangements for one night!

I am looking forward to taking my god-daughter to the ballet but I will not take her until she is at least six years old. I wonder how long will she remain interested and when she will succumb to the delights of the Spice girls and other more "cooler" interests.

I think the influx of babies must be part of the RB's newest Outreach programme!
