"RB Giselle this Spring"

I've just read Eugene's comment on another thread where he writes that few dancers can do justice to the role of Giselle. I'm going to (hopefully) get tickets for the RB Giselle and I was wondering who ballet.co regulars would recommend I book to see (I realise that casting is not set in stone!). I'd also like to see someone other than Bussell or Guillem.

Thanks in advance!

Well Bussell is not dancing in Giselle so you can't see her anyway. Rojo got very good reviews when she made her debut last year. Other casts are Cojocaru (her debut) who is seen as a rising star, Guillem of course, Hatley, Wildor and Yoshida. All wonderful dancers so won't recommend one over the other but I hope to see Rojo,Cojocaru and Hatley. Perhaps the other regulars would like to recommend just one!

I am seeing these three also. Difficult to choose one over the other, But if I was only allowed to see one in the season, I would choose Belinda Hatley. Her performance at Sadlers Wells (replacing an injured Darcey) was magical. See the review done by Ann Williams for Ballet.Co in July 1999.

Well, the first time I saw Viviana was as Giselle, and she knocked me sideways. Best mad scene I've ever seen. Stunning. of the current crop? Go for Wildor I'd say.

Well now you think about it - I would like to Rojo and Cojocaru doing Giselle. I do not know any of the dancing at La Scala and I really do not want to go fishing in the hope of catching a really good Giselle at La Scala!

Don't know if she is scheduled this time, but Leanne Benjamin's Giselle with Carlos Acosta at Sadler's Wells was fab and was a serious rival to the opening night cast of Guillem and Hilaire.

I would recommend Yoshida or Guillem. They are two of the best dancers I have seen dance the role. Yoshida's mad scene is not one to miss and both are the lightest Giselle's for the second act. Good luck in deciding which to go for.
