Thanks Pete, it's a few like "légion d'honneur" or "chevalier des arts et des Lettres" in France.

Really great news about Matthew Bourne, who has done so much to introduce the UK public to contemporary dance with his fine work.

Here's the other dance awards I noticed, with 2p worth that I wrote for another place:

- CBE, Richard Alston, choreographer and Artistic Director The Place and Richard Alston Dance Company. For services to Dance.

Richly deserved, Alston as a dancer, choreographer and AD has played a key role in the development of modern dance in the UK. Now in his 50s, he is arguably producing some of the best work of his career at the moment and in his various roles at the Place, continues to help young and develping dance artists find their way.

- MBE, Penny Greenland, Founder Director Jabadao Centre for Movement Studies. For services to Dance. Not someone I know, but I am told that she is highly regarded in the profesion and that this is a well deserved award for someone out of the limelight.

- MBEs also for: Jean Graves, for services to Ballroom and Latin American Dancing; Audrey Hawkins, Principal Alison School of Dance. For services to the community in Solihull ad the West Midlands; Gloria Sheaves. For services to Ballroon Dancing.

I suspect that the OBE was awarded not just for Matthew's contribution in introducing ballet to a wider audience (great though I think that has been), but also for his work and dedication to AMP's Education Trust which aims to promote ballet to a younger generation. For example, The AMP Education Trust responds to invitations from schools to run workshops for the students. These schools do not have to be dance schools, but they give 'A' level students the chance to do practical work with dancers such as Neil Penlington who have performed AMP's Swan Lake (which is on the syllabus), and who can pass on valuable experience and encourage individual interpretations. The Friend's organisation helps with some fundraising events to maximise the amount of money available for this important work.

Anyway, congratulations again to Matthew, and also to all the other award winners. Great news for dance of all kinds.

   Dear All,
Thank you so much for all your kind messages. I also feel that it is recognition for everyone involved in AMP and the work that we have done in building new dance audiences, and on a more personal note,it makes my Mum and Dad very happy, which is nice! Thank you again Matthew
PS Hey Bruce, how about mounting a campaign to get the wonderful Lynn Seymour a DBE; and what about John Ashford at The Place Theatre? Surely he deserves some kind of recognition? What other dance figures have been overlooked?

I think this is a lovely idea for a Mini-poll - or rather it might be. My first thought was to start up another thread to collect ideas for the people who might be honoured.

Then I thought about it a bit more and it might be considered rather crass - you could argue that everybody on the list would be deserving and it would be horrid to rank people so.

What do others think - good idea or not?
