"RB Nutcracker 22 Dec"

Anyone saw the performance last night?

What a breathtaking production!, a delight to watch, really! Cojocaru replacing injured Barahona was so lovely as Clara (her debut at ROH, I think). Yoshida as the Sugar Plum Fairy in her solo and in the Grand pdd with the Prince (Cope replacing injured Kobborg) was absolutely fantastic.

It was indeed magnificent and was a great performance for the TV broadcast. Yoshida simply perfect, Cope partnering superbly, Cojocaru vivid and passionate, Jonathan Howells a very good Nutcrakcer with excellent mime, and Zenaida Yanowsky a commanding Rose Fairy with great sweeping ronds des jambes. A special word too, for Anthony Dowells wonderful Drosselmeyer, very touchingly acted, and danced in the grand manner; he used his cloak in a manner worthy of Nureyev, with great panache. One odd thing - the great Svetlanov conducted, but didn't take a curtain call, leaving the orchestra at a loss, and to be applauded by the audience after the light went up

On Thursday night Andrea Quinn conducted instead of Svetlanov, with a note in the programme saying he had 'withdrawn' from the performance. Was it just that night, or has he withdrawn from the whole series? Is he ill, or what?

Who knows? Having now seen the broadcast I noticed some odd tempo changes in the overture; near the beginning (where there's a short clarinet solo) it all sounded a bit laboured. Was there a lack of festive spirit?

I heard that there have been some complaints by the dancers. Philip Hesketh conducted one night last week.

From what I believe there were quite a few complaints by the dancers! He was conducting the pdd 35 secs slower than Andrea Quinn ! Not sure if he will be returning!
