"New mini poll suggestion"

While reading about ENB's Nutcracker (and looking forward to RB's version next week) it occurred to me that a possibloe poll could be "What Christmas present will Ross Stretton have for us next year?" My possibles would be: a new Swan Lake, Dowell's Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Nutcracker (not again, please!), Coppelia, Don Quixote (new production?). I can't think of any more family-friendly "happy" type ballets though I'm sur e there are some. I'd love to see Napoli here, or how about Le Corsaire?

A nice idea which given its topicality I would like to use for the next poll. Can I ask other readers for possible answers please.

Note that an earlier poll covered some of this space but more generically: "If the Nutcracker were banned at Christmas with what would you replace it?". The results were interesting!

I've also had some other ideas for polls and these will get developed on at some time too. Thank you to those who helped on this.

I've just spend some time updating the mini-poll page with the results of our recent polls. Hadn't been able to do this since August. Here are the new ones that have been added:

What would you most like to see more about on Ballet.co?
Money apart, where would you sit to watch dance?
How often do you visit Ballet.co?
Who would make the best English National Ballet AD?
In a week how many different computers might you use to access Ballet.co?
Do you know what a Fondu is? (as in ballet movement)

The Mini-polls page is at:

Listening to Jamie Tapper recently at the Ballet Association, she reminded us of some wonderful Cranko ballets.

I think it would be wonderful for someone to do Eugene Onegin again.

So do I. ENB were supposed to be doing it last year, but I gather they had problems with the Cranko estate or something.

Since we're talking about polls and Cranko, why not Pineapple Poll?

Since we are talking about ballets for young children to enjoy, you can't do much better than Nutcracker or Cinderella. These also bring in members of the public who probably don't go to another ballet till the following Christmas. You need a bit of magic at this time of the year! There are of course various other shows here and there; however, Nutcracker and Cinderella both have the advantage of a score which has musical integrity as an overall conception, rather than a cut and paste job with chunks of pastiche Tchaikovsky to fill the gaps as can happen elsewhere.

If, on the other hand, a change is really needed, there is Bourmeister's "The Snow Maiden", which uses music by Tchaikovsky (partly from his incidental music for the play, and partly from his first symphony); has anyone seen it? Sounds attractive.

A pure dance option (perhaps to alternate with performances of Nutcracker) could be "Jewels"; Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds seem to go with the party season!

Well, I think there is some good news on the "Onegin" front, as I have heard from a very good source (I can't say who, but it is a dance journalist) that the RB will be doing "Onegin" next season. Ross Stretton also plans new ballets by Mats Ek & Stanton Welch.

Thank you - the news on Onegin and the Kirov returning with Jewels sends me off on my Christmas holidays very happy indeed!
