"POB Strikes"

With Friday and the opening of Jewels approaching, and a number of us heading for Paris, I thought I would open a new thread for news on the prospects of any cancelled perfomances.

Thanks in advance.

I've received a letter from AROP about an "Matinee exceptionelle, Reve des enfants" of Jewels at 5 pm this Sunday. It's a traditional Christmas charity performance with much higher prices than normal. I should think that this particular performance at least won't be cancelled.

If I'm reading it correctly, the last two performances have been cancelled. It therefore looks likely that the weekend may as well too. We'll know tomorrow.

Bruce.

The Jewels rehearsal of today was cancelled and it was just a no public rehearsal, it's not like tomorrow where theorically it's "Generale" it's the last rehearsal before limited public as Opera personal, Dancers' parents and friends and just before the "Première" public performance.
I'm very pessimistic and think all the serial of performances of Jewels will be cancelled.

It's not because it's a charity matinee they can't cancel it. And I think if it continues like that all will be cancel. Nutcracker, Fledermaus, Zauberflöte and Jewels. I hope to make mistake but I'm really not sure. Especially since yesterday all the rehearsals on stage with dress, sets, light and so on were cancelled : generale of Fledermaus, pre-générale of Jewels and two public performance, one of nutcracker tonight and the premiere of Fledermaus.

Why do you think that they will pick on Jewels for cancellation when tehy have been going ahead with the performaces of the Nutcraker?

I think it's a question of moment , the period of the end of the year , Christmas , etc.. is very near. The strikers have probably decided to "get into action" from today with the cancelling of Nutcracker , tomorrow the première of Fledermaus.I am very pessimistic about the chances to see Jewels the 15th.Let's hope they will not cancel all the performances of Jewels.I just saw on TV the costumes of Jewels made by Christian Lacroix , they are so gorgeous!

I've got a ticket for the performance on 28th Dec. Is it likely that the performances after Christmas will be also cancelled ? But I've already given up my hope. I'm going to Paris for other reasons and I'll have so much to do anyway. I'm glad I live in England and love the RB !!

I cannot tell you how depressed this whole situation has made me. I wished I never booked.

Dear Catherine, you have been so kind, could you tell me if today's (Thursday's) rehearsal of Jewels was cancelled.

I am going to get the 50% return on my transport ticket, and just pray I can get a reservation tomorrow if it looks like they are going to perform. I certainly don't want to waste any more money on this situation than I absolutely need to.

Grateful for any advice.

Listen, thinking about it, I'm just plain fed up.

I have a good ticket for Friday, a decent ticket for Saturday night of Jewels and tickets for the two school performances. If they do go on, would any of our French friends like these? I will sell for half price.

Please e-mail me on meunier@hotmail.com

I will now, I think, only plan on seeing the Paris Opera Ballet, least I just happen to be in Paris on a day they are performing and assuming I can get a ticket, in foreign climbs. This poor treatment of the general public - without adequate reason - would not be tolerated at the Metropolitan Opera for example.

Unfortunately, the rehearsal is cancelled. Gall said you begin to work and they vote no. All the performance at this moment are cancelled. perhaps not all the serial but i'm afraid by it. in fact they think even to close Opera how they make in the seventies.

I hope to see Paquita Jan 27. I hope the strike matter would be resolved by then.

I am surprised you able to get a refund on your travel tickets - is the POB footing doing this for you?

Regarding the Met - I am told that the Met Stage hands get $200000 a year. But they work long hours and will put on a Saturday matinee and a completely different Saturday evening show. American Unions can be as bloody minded as their French counterpart. But at least they recognize that high wages must be conditional on maximizing revenue. They have no choice if te goverment is not involved The French Union just expect the government to bail them out in higher subsidies!

No, Eugene, the Paris Opera have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with my 50% transport refund.

I note they don't note in their refund policy to refund any handling charges one may have paid, nor telephone costs for their absurdly expensive lack of telephone service.

A rum shot all round. A very poor show.

I am sure it must have been as frustrating for the POB dancers as it is for the public. It would be such a shame if they are really unable to dance a single performance of Jewels in the end after all the time they have spent on rehearsals.

I agree - if the POB are going to charge 2 francs per minute for reservation I think they should compensate cancelled performance ticket holder for the expense.

But I hope you are aware the superb Paris Opera Ballet web site which accepts on-line reservations and has an English language option.

I am holding off my travel plans until the ticket situation is resovled.

When I tried to see Raymonda last October - The Shuttle train service was so badly delayed I missed the performance. So I know how you feel

Unfortunately ALL THE PERFORMANCES (Jewels of 15, Jewels and nutcrackers of 16, School demonstrations 16 & 17 and Charity matinée "Child dream") previous for tomorrow and the week end are cancelled.
It's sad to arrive to that but I think it's Direction fault who says It's all or nothing. It's nothing.
SOrry for your all the english balletomanes who want to go to POB to discover our Jewels version but I'm till sure they don't dance the serial especially it's period feast and it's not the dancer who are in question. Poor dancer who pass more one month to learn this three ballets and don't dance nothing at else. It's a nightmare for them. To work and to not have pleasure to dance before public. It's dramatic.

At the end of September and again at the end of October I lost several Paris Theatre bookings because of strikes first on the French Railways and then at the Paris Opera Ballet. It is not worth planning any sort of theatre visit to Paris unless you have plenty of spare time and are fairly wealthy and do not care if you lose your tickets. Go to Paris for the Art Galleries and the food but do not book the POB in advance it is not worth the hassle. You cannot say you had not been warned as Anne Williams ran a thread on this about a month ago, when she went to Paris and the POB was cancelled.

Yes, but unfortunately Ann Williams failed to learn her own lesson and the silly woman booked to see 'Jewels' on 28th December, which is also likely to be cancelled!

Will I ever learn? And Robert, can we even guarantee that by then the art galleries won't be on strike too?

Ann, before you go : please inform you !
I know a lot of antique-dealers who are closed after Christmas until mid-January. (the same as in London)
In spite of everything, Paris stays a beautiful city...if they keep the lights on !
