"Rojo's Ondine"

While comparing notes with somebody else during the first interval on Saturday, we both noted how very much like Fonteyn Tamara Rojo seemed to be. Were we just being fooled by the physical similarities, or were we right? Have any of our more senior readers seen both performances live so that they compare notes?

   Alison

This doesn't answer your question, but at Sarah Wildor's last Ondine, I happened to be sitting next to a lady who had seen Fonteyn and in fact seemed to remember the ballet in great detail. She thought Sarah was very lovely and a worthy successor to Fonteyn and particularly commented on Persson's performance, which she thought was excellent.

I don't know about you, but I have really enjoyed Ondine this season. I missed it at Sadlers Wells, as I was living abroad, but have had a lovely time watching all three Ondines this time round - and liked them all in their different ways, although Tamara Rojo really is something special, isn't she? I find it is one of those ballets, that the more you see it, the more you want to see it - and different performers in it.

I too enjoyed Rojo's Ondine very much. She is really something special. It surprised me that I loved her Ondine more than Viviana's I saw last year. I saw Rojo with the ENB many times and she was always my fourvorite ENB dancer. But I've never seen her like this before and I think it's really exciting that she has joined the Royal. For me, Rojo's Ondine was the best performance this season so far. She is listed in the programme for the mixed bill. Does anyone know what she is dancing ? She wasn't there for the first night.

Rojo was one of the 'side girls' in Symphonic Variations last night - the other was Sarah Wildor!

Rojo was nice in Ondine but it is a shame about the ballet! I cannot see any thing in it. I thought the corp de ballet choreography was pretty ghastly. It has a fine music score but it is very austere and not very atmospheric.

I do not think I have seen a full length ballet more empty then Ondine

Jane, lucky you ! I wish I had been there to see Tamara in Symphonic Variations. How was she ? And the other girl was Sarah Wildor ! What a treat ! I missed Sarah last time as she was injured. I'd love to read some reviews for Symphonic Variations with this new cast.

LAST EDITED ON 14-12-00 AT 11:29 AM (GMT)

I have been racking my brains to think of something helpful to say on this thread. I did see Fonteyn, several times, but haven't seen Rojo or anyone else - you understand that in some ways there is no need to see anyone else! If I lived in London I'd go to see every cast, but I have to make choices.

My feelings are that from what I've seen of Wildor and Rojo they would be very good as Ondine - expressive, musical dancers. Alina C. could probably do it, and I hope she gets the chance some day.

There still hasn't been anyone who can make a real comparison, but I wanted to join in.

Special efforts seem to have been made to cast the side girls in Symphonic from strength - Hatley and Tapper, and now Rojo and Wildor. It has made a big difference.
