"Manon on video"

I recently bought the Penney/Dowell/Wall Manon on video (mainly for the music, which I love).I've seen three Manon casts this year (Benjamin/Sansom, Revie/Acosta and Vladimir Malakov and Brigitte Stadler in Vienna) and it's becoming one of my favourite ballets. Am I alone in being slightly disappointed by the video? It seems rather passionless compared to recent versions, which seems odd as this was the orginal production.

I liked Jennifer Penney very much (especially in ACt Two) but though Dowell is obviously a wonderful dancer, I found him rather miscast and (dare I say it) dull compared with contemporary Des Grieux. Wall was terrific (despite the seventies hair!) but overall it semmed rather subdued. Has anyone seen the Australian Ballet version? How does it compare?

The Australian Ballet's video is excellent (featuring Justine Summers, Stephen Heathcote and Nigel Burley, 1995) and I strongly recommend it for a comparison with the RB version. The AB's production has tended to strike me as more gutsy. The pdd in the Act 1 scene 2 of the AB video is especially good.

Dowell's "seventies hair" was a wig, supposedly in keeping with the ballet's period. I think I am right in saying, and no doubt I will be corrected if I am wrong, that it only became the norm in the RB for DG not to wear a wig when Irek started dancing the role.
