"Royal Ballet casting info"
Could anyone tell me, as a relative newcomer, whether there is any convention in the way in the casting for forthcoming Royal Ballet productions is advertised? I ask because the casting for Romeo and Juliet as published in the brochure for booking period 3 lists a total of 8 names. I am, of course, familiar enough with the plot and the names of the company's principal dancers to know which roles the first pair of names will be dancing! And I assume the third named is dancing Mercutio (right?), but I haven't a clue which of the roles such as Tybalt, Benvolio, Friar Lawrence, Capulet, Paris the remaining dancers will be perfoming. I believe the last two named are ladies, but have no idea which of them will be playing which roles (Lady Capulet? The nurse?) Perhaps it doesn't matter, or perhaps it is just assumed that people would or should know the answer already. Anyway, please forgive my ignorance, and if there is anyone who could enlighten me, I should be very grateful.

Also, I appreciate that R and J features a number of highly dramatic roles, but why are eight dancers named for this particular ballet while other equally significant roles in other ballets (e.g. Rothbart in Swan Lake) go unmentioned? Which brings me back to my first point. Is there a convention as to which roles get mentioned in which ballets?

As for your second question, heaven knows! I'm sure I remember a time when Hilarion got a mention in the casting programme, and this year Drosselmeyer and Clara and the Nutcracker have got a mention in Nutcracker - a good thing, as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier are only on for about 10 minutes in total!

Re R&J, looking at the casting I'd say at a rough guess that it's as follows:

J, R, Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Friar Laurence (or is it Lord Capulet?), Lady C, Nurse

but then I can't see why they'd leave out Benvolio and Lord C. It'd have been a lot easier to work out a few years ago, before the RB lost so many of their Mercutios/Benvolios/Tybalts.

The RB used to give a lot more casting information - the pas de trois in Swan Lake, Bluebirds, Myrtha etc. One of the reasons they've stopped is that they now send out the programme, and expect us to book, so far in advance that they feel it takes away the flexibility of casting if they announce the minor roles - they don't actually know who they'll want to be casting eight months from now. In the olden days we only used to book six or eight weeeks ahead and it was much easier for them. When Anthony Dowell spoke to the Ballet Association this point was made fairly forcibly and he asked if people would rather have detailed casting which was then subject to change, or less information - the feeling was very strongly in favour of more information, but nothing seems to have changed since then.

Thanks very much for your reply. I was particularly interested to note your comments on the Nutcracker casting, as I shall be taking my daughter to see the performance on 6th Jan eve. It would appear that Alina Cojocaru will be Clara, and, as she seems to be *tipped for the top*, I am very much looking forward to her performance, especially as I gather the role has been enhanced since the last time I saw the production.
