"Looking for information about Adam Cooper"

I know I'm somewhat behind in this, but I've just discovered the DVD of Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake and am now a tiny bit obsessed with Adam Cooper. I haven't been able to find out much about what he's doing now, or if there's any possibility that he'll return to the US anytime soon.

I'd love to find out more, and especially to find out if there's a source for pictures or other videos of him performing.

If anyone here can help, I'd appreciate it very much.

sarah.

   Dear Sarah,

Rest assured, you are not alone in your "tiny" obsession. There have been quite a few people posting requests for information about when and where Adam is performing - so much so that I am attempting to get permission from him and his agent to set up a website for Adam to supply the desired information. However, at the moment I'm a bit tied up at work, and I haven't had the chance to speak to him recently, but I'll keep trying. According to some sources, he will be dancing with K-Ballet as a guest in the New Year on their Japanese tour, and I have also heard that he has a new video due out soon, but I haven't heard anything about any possible U.S. dates.

Jenny and I will do our best to pin the boy down and get some answers as soon as possible, but in the meantime, enjoy Swan Lake. It's such a favourite with me that I have two copies - I got so fed up with friends (to whom I'd lent my first copy) keeping it for so long, that I had to get a "home" copy as well as a "lending" copy! However, I must add that I enjoy Scott Ambler's performance just as much as I enjoy Adam's (I have to say that, otherwise Scott won't talk to me again), but the pair together are just a joy to watch.

By the way, you might like to know that Matthew's latest production with AMP, "The Car Man", will be going on tour to America next year. Although it doesn't have Adam in it, it's well worth a visit if you get the chance. It's in a very different style from Swan Lake, as it's much more raw, but still with very strong emotions, very passionate, sexy, violent, and with quite a few references to well-known films. I think it's great - in it's own way as good as Swan Lake, but very different, and it's already started winning awards here.

Thank you for the update. I'll certainly check back for more. I really hope I'll get a chance to see Cooper perform live at some point.

I heard that Car Man won't be coming to New York, which surprised me, but perhaps I'll still be able to see it when it's here.

In the meantime, I'll continue to scour the Internet for pictures!

By the way, if anyone has any good resources for Cooper pictures, I'd love to know about it.

sarah.

   Dear Sarah

There's an excellent paperback out now called "Matthew Bourne and his Adventures in Motion Pictures". It's full of information on Swan Lake and Adam, with plenty of lovely photos. Worthwhile for any serious Cooper fan.

There used to be a good AMP website but they seem to have gone off the air. I'd ask the Forum where it's gone but I can't work out how to send a message to them!!! Perhaps you could ask for the new webpage. Love Jane

   Dear Sarah

Join the club! I have already gone into print on these pages on this subject so I won't again but why not e-mail me. I have also got two copies of Swan Lake One video and one DVD because I keep having to lend the video out. I have managed to cut down the watching of it to about once a fortnight (from every other day or more!) but I know it so well that I only have to hear the music to picture every twitch of a swan's neck. Actually when I first saw the stage production it was the lovely Simon Cooper who lit the flame. He has a different style but is a very powerful performer. I would watch either one of them anytime.

Wow, thank you all. I've ordered the book about Bourne from Amazon UK (it's not available here), and also a back issue of Dance Europe (I think that's it) magazine with a lovely picture of Cooper on the cover.

Karen, I would love to email you, but can't seem to get a correct address!

I heard that the AMP website will be up again in late January, with tour information.

I've been watching the Swan Lake dvd pretty obsessively for a week or so now (I know, I'm such a neophyte!). I'm kicking myself for not seeing the production when it was here in New York, but I guess all I can do now is try to make up for lost time.

Oh, do any of you think there will be a video release of Cinderella?

I'm glad I found this site!

   Dear Sarah,

I didn't get the chance to read all these postings before I went to see "Car Man" again tonight, so I missed the opportunity of asking Scott about where in the States they will be visiting, but I am going again on Monday for the special Crusaid midnight matinee, so I'll try and remember to ask him then.

I know that a film does exist of "Cinderella", but it was a rehearsal, so I doubt that that version would be released on video. However, there is the possibility that Matthew might revive the production some time in the future. They are definitely filming "Car Man" next spring for video release, and there is talk about re-staging "Nutcracker" and "Highland Fling" some time, as well as a brand new production, "Edward Sissorhands", so there are lots of plans in the pipeline from AMP, even if it doesn't involve the lovely Mr. Cooper!

It's Issue #2, and I found it here:

http://www.danceeurope.net/docs/SUBSCR/BACK3.SHTML

There's also an issue there with Cooper and Wildor from Cinderella on the cover, but the back issues are expensive to get here in the US, so I only ordered the one.

I got an email from AMP saying that there are no plans right now to release Cinderella on video, and that their website will be back up in late January.

I feel sort of blue today, kicking myself for not seeing AMP when they were here, and wondering if I'll ever get a chance to see the company live, or Adam Cooper. But life is long, it's hard to imagine him not coming back to New York at *some* point!

Sigh.

   Dear Sarah,

Cheer up, I'm sure you'll get your wish sometime. After all, Adam's still pretty young, and I'm sure he'll visit America again.

Another thought is: save up your dollars, and come on a visit to London, and see if you can catch up with some things here. We're a friendly lot, and I sure help can be given with performance details, suggestions for accommodation etc.

AMP themselves are in performance at London's Old Vic Theatre with Car Man until about the middle of February 2001, then they'll be out and about a bit (both filming and on tour around Europe) for the rest of the spring and summer. Scott said that they get about 2 weeks off around July-ish, and then they're off to America (I'll check with him on Monday for any details of venues). Then they start rehearsals on Edward Sissorhands. On top of that, Matthew has just finished the dancer auditions for the new London production of My Fair Lady, and at the end of December will be working on the choreography for it (with Scott's help), so you could say they are more than a little busy!

By the way, check the chat page, I left you a message.

Well, Sarah, Elly that Caz mentioned above used to stalk Adam Cooper, so she is like you! She is nearly a doctor now. As for me, well I went back to school to learn French just in case I ever bumped into Sylvie and could speak to her! And it worked - I have spoken to her several times at the stage door and I think she looks rather pityingly at me and thinks "Oh dear, not him again!". And my biggest moment was when a bouquet I took to the stage door was presented to her at a curtain call. So I guess you have to call that obsesion.

BRUCE: Do I sniff a possibility for a mini-poll here? Something to do with obsessions?

I am a major Nicolas Le Riche junkie and regularly go to Paris from Nottingham to see him dance. I've spoken to him on a number occasions and got 3 photos with him (exceptionally sad I know). My prize possession is a poster of 'Sylvia' he signed with Aurelie Dupont. I also have a copy of the fantastic documentary made about him which I taped off Arte in 1998.It was with a mixture of delight and sadness that I learned of him coming to dance at Covent Garden as I knew his fan following would grow. I've only been to Covent Garden twice in my life, both times to see Nicolas!! Biggest buzz was when I'd bought tickets for 2 performances at the Lowry for the POB visit to increase my chance of seeing him dance-then the casting was announced and he wasn't coming at all. When it came to the day I decided to go to both performances anyway, arrived for the matinee to see that he was dancing after all, I think to replace Laurent Hilaire. I don't know whether the physical trembling is something other ballet fans experience- I'd like to know!
I don't class myself a balletomane at all, I'd much rather think of myself as a fan. I think the ballet world has a huge way to go to meeting the needs of the dance-loving public, particularly the majority of us who haven't studied dance beyond early teens. Where are the magazines that don't feel they've come from the 1950's, where are the evening classes in appreciating dance, where are the TV programmes that aren't voiced over by someone who sounds like Celia Johnson (Deborah Bull is from Derby apparently- Nottingham isn't far from Derby but I've never heard anyone talk like her).
While I'm feeling angry, why does all the ROH publicity assume that people understand the way their seasons are planned -I picked up the brochure for performances Nov-March 2001, looking for details of Romeo and Juliet (Nicolas again!)as I knew it was coming on in February...there was nothing. I happened to know that they work in booking periods and that this wasn't a brochure of everything on until March, just those things that could be booked in that booking period. There was however no explanation of this concept which is alien to most theatre-goers around the country. Similarly, the programmes are written assuming that people know something about the ballet-POB programmes are fantastic, they give you levels of info from the snippet to read before the performance, to detailed links between the music score and each variation.
Sorry to highlight these frustrations in an unrelated thread but I was so thrilled to read of the joy and pleasure discovered through watching Adam Cooper dance and I think we new dance fans deserve better from the ballet world.

   >I don't know whether the physical trembling is something

You better believe it! The very first time I went to see Sylvie back in '88 it turned out that she was injured and I missed her. I felt so disappointed, and I think that most of the audience did too, and poor Maria Almeida, who stood in for her, seemed to have to bear the brunt of the frustration. Since then I've seen Sylvie 25 or so times, and on each occasion I'm twitching like an idiot travelling down in case she's ill again. And I can be almost physically sick with nervositude if I go to wait at the stage door to blurt out my greeting. Seems ridiculous, doesn't it - she must think I'm a freak.

>I don't class myself a balletomane at all, I'd much rather
>think of myself as a fan.

That's extremely well said - I have often thought that. You travel from Nottingham to Paris - just think how many fans make a similar pilgrimage to Nottingham most weekends to see their beloved Forest playing football. It's just the same - you get hooked. And nothing, however logically or sensibly explained, can make you change your mind. You feel almost disloyal if you go to see someone else!

Friends who come to performances with me don't know whether to pity me or laugh at me as I try desperately not to show them how stressful the pre-performance time is. The worst was going to see Sleeping Beauty last Jan, supposedly with Sylvie Guillem and Nicolas Le Riche, to discover that neither were dancing. The performance was wonderful but I was left feeling like a drug addict who'd had a bad fix. The opposite is when I see a performance I've waited months for and then I can sense it in my skin for weeks. I wonder if the addiction is made more acute by the scarcity of dance sustenance (if that's how its spelt)?
The football analogy makes perfect sense-I'm a scouser originally-the phrase 'a matter of life or death' comes to mind.

I think it is for me, at least. It is such a rare treat and (late at night after a gin or two) I'll admit that when I have a ticket I worry that I might die before the performance and miss it!
I sometimes wonder if the London gang who can go as often as they want might miss out on the speciality of the occasion sometimes. "No pain, no gain", as they said.

Yes, then there's that earth-shattering moment when, with heart-aflutter, you pick out the insert from the programme to find the person you have come all that way to see is actually dancing. And you can't understand why the other members of your party look at you blankly. And - Sarah, I have to admit that the best moment ever for me was waiting to be let in to the Edinburgh Festival Theatre, clutching my programme, for a 'Darcey and Friends' one night event. Sadly, Johnny Cope (who had been billed to partner Darcey in just about everything) was ill at that time, so who should be stepping in his usual reliable fashion was...guess who, Adam . Bliss!

   >>I don't know whether the physical trembling is something other ballet fans experience- I'd like to know!

I get a rush when the corps run on, especially the wilies and the swans.

>I can be almost physically sick with nervositude if I go to wait at the stage door to blurt out my greeting.

There is an old adage that says you should never met your heroes. You will either be extremely disappointed in what they are like in real life, or the experience will turn you from a perfectly reasonable person into a blithering idiot. Luckily I remembered this when I saw my favourite dancer Leticia Muller in HMV, here in Brum. I managed a brief thanks for the many magical times I have seen her dance, and quickly ran away before I was reduced to a dribbling fool!

Some people would say I'm obsessed with Marilyn Monroe on account of the 100+ posters and 90+ books I have on her. I just like her a lot; the first film I can really remember seeing was "Some Like It Hot", when I was about six or seven. This I think shows obsession starts in your formative years.

Would it be too far off-topic here for me to ask some questions about the state of the Royal Ballet? From what I've been reading it sounds as if they're in pretty dire straits, but I'm curious about how that came to be.

And I'd also love to know more about the K Ballet and the defection of all these male dancers.

Anyone who'd like to dish the dirt, please do!

Sarah - to get back to your original query about where you could find other videos of Adam, I was just going through my videos last night when I came on Macmillan's lovely 'Winter Dreams' (one of his very last works)and there was Adam as one of Masha's (Viviana Durante)rival suitors. This video is now about eight or nine years old, so Adam was pretty young at the time plus he was sporting a beard for the role! This video is well worth getting (try Dance Books)as not only is the ballet a little gem of music, dance and drama, but it has a wonderful cast - Bussell, Durante, Mukhamedov, Dowell, Tranah as well as our Adam.

I don't know if Adam's in The Sandman or not (I do hope he is), but there's a photo of Irek and Tamara Rojo in the Radio Times.<
>Incidentally, on the subject of meeting your heroes, I do remember watching Adam handling a crowd of fans outside the Dominion's stage door after the last Swan Lake matinee, when Jenny and I were waiting for Scott. I work with actors a great deal, some of them very big names, and occasionally you get an actor who seems to take his fans a little for granted, and finds it 'rather a bore' (or at least that's the impression they give). However, I was very impressed with the way Adam was not only very patient and polite to everyone when he must have been absolutely exhausted. Not only that, but he was so thoughtfull when faced with a teenage fan who had "frozen" when faced with her hero. He very sweetly spoke to her first, asking her if she wanted the programme she was clutching signed, and when he only got a mumbled "yes" and a nod in reply, started asking her questions to draw her out, like "did she dance herself", and "what ballet was she working on at the moment", etc. That's one fan who floated home, instead of kicking herself for a missed opportunity. Would that all our heroes were that kind when we get to meet them!

I can relate so well to that! When Sylvie came with Dance Bites to Leicester a few years back (that was the occasion when my bouquet was presented to her at the curtain call) I went to the stage door afterwards, and I was the only one there! She autographed my programme, and I had been practicing all day the words: "Avez-vous faites des projects pour dīner?" (I had even checked with my French teacher that it was the correct thing to ask) but of course the words stuck in my throat and she slipped away into the darkness leaving me silent and crestfallen. I know she couldn't have accepted, but then.... But at least I had the consolation of knowing she was returning to her hotel to sleep with my posy in a vase at her bedside....

All the dancers were wonderful, and the music was gorgeous (does anyone know which Tchaikovsky piano works those were? the package on this tape isn't very informative). It was great to see Adam, though he looked a little strange with so much clothing on.

Dear Sarah, I remembered to ask Scott last night about venues in North America for next year's tour of Car Man. After much scratching of heads and various collective thoughts, the list seems to include (in no particular order): Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Berkley (nr San Francisco), Boston, Seattle, Chicago, Washington D.C., Detroit and Toronto. He said that the tour starts somewhere around the end of August, after their European tour, which currently includes Lisbon, Amsterdam, Jerusalem and Haifa. Not all the company are staying in America for the whole tour, as some of them (Scott for one) will be returning home early to start work on "Edward Sissorhands". Details and dates are rather fluid at the moment, but keep an eye on the AMP website when it returns next January for tour confirmation.

   Dear Sarah,
I have heard from my friend that Adam will be joining K-Company's European Tour in 2001. I don't know the exact date.
I also found he was performing with Scotish Ballet in October 2000. (I found it after the date.)
He is a guest principal of Scotish Ballet and somewhere else.
So that, check which dance companies have his name on their guest principals lists, and their programs.

Also, did you see the film "Billy Eliot"?
Adam is dancing in there very very briefly.

K-company is the Japanese ballet company founded by Tetsuya Kumakawa, ex-Royal Ballet principal called Teddy.

regards.

I am so glad to find others that share an obsession. I have just recently become a big fan of Mr. Cooper after seeing Billy Elliot four times in two weeks. It is fantastic and I could not get my mind off of the dancer at the end who was only in it briefly so I did some research and fell upon this posting. It's great and I thankyou for all of the information! I am now also awaiting a time when Adam Cooper will be in the States (preferably the east coast) and I fully plan to see him as well as acquire the tape of Swan Lake. I just wanted to thankyou all for all of the information, and you didn't even know that you were helping!

I know exactly what you mean- obsession is the word. I received the Swan Lake video for Christmas and could not believe how much I enjoyed it. The only thing that I have heard is that he is touring in Japan with the K-Ballet this spring. I am planning to go to England this autumn so am hoping to hear that he is performing somewhere at that time so I can get to see him dance in person. If you're interested in personal info. about him, I found quite a bit when I searched on www.google.com under the name Sarah Wildor (his wife). I found lots more using her name than I did using his. I would appreciate hearing anything you do discover, so feel free to e-mail me. I also check this site quite often. Enjoy your obsession- I certainly am!
