"BRB Ashton tour"

Sunderland was the second venue on BRBs tour and, having seen excerpts from The Two Pigeons both on video and at Darcey's big night out in Edinburgh last year (Adam & Belinda), I looked forward to seeing the whole thing in the second half of the company's Ashton tour. I was not disappointed. The first half of the so-called Two Pigeons programme featured 4 divertissements - Voices of Spring, Five Brahms Waltzes in the manner of Isadora Duncan, Tweedledum & Tweedledee and The Walk to the Paradise Garden. While these were well performed and gently drew in the audience, the real stunner was the second half of the programme, The Two Pigeons. The night I saw it, Dorcas Walters was the young girl, Leticia Muller the Gypsy girl and Robert Parker the Young Man. The standard of performance was terrific - Robert Parker gave his all (and. yes, it WAS noted how much Matthew Bourne drew on the chucking out of the prince after the bar scene!). The gypsy scenes fizzed with energy and colour. The last tender scene moved my friend's daughter to tears and we had to almost carry her out of the theatre. One can only wonder at spending an evening of so much enchantment at a cost of only 10 per seat!

Glad to hear that Pigeons has lost none of it enchantment - I think it is one of Ashtons greatest creations, especially as the emotions of the final scene are so genuine, touching and never overdone. I long to see it in London, as I couldnt manage to get to any of the tour venues - maybe BRB will bring it to SW next year. I also wish the RB would revive it - there are so many ideal Young Girls in the company - Belinda top of the list! It is 40 years old next year.
